I had no idea how much I could love a radio program before last year. The BBC Radio 4 did a production of Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere, which led me to Cabin Pressure. John Finnemore writes the show and it stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Martin Crieff), Roger Alum (Douglas Richardson), John Finnemore (Arthur Shappey), and Stephanie Cole (Carolyn Knapp-Shappey). Anthony Head (Hercules) also makes an appearance starting with Season 3 and going forward.
When I came across this article about Cabin Pressure winning this award for Best Radio Sitcom 2013, I had to share. It is just brilliant. I read that there was a final episode with Gertie’s crew, and that would be…well, it would just be brilliant, wouldn’t it? It is set to be recorded early this year. How exciting!
Carolyn Knapp-Shappey receives the plane in her divorce and creates MJN (My Jet Now) Air. Carolyn turns the 16 seat jet (Gertie) into a chartered…airline. Carolyn along with an oddball crew comprised of Pilot Martin Crieff, First Officer Douglas Richardson, and flight attendant Arthur Shappey (Carolyn’s son). This is some seriously funny stuff. Go listen, immediately. I know you can purchase all four seasons on iTunes (because I have). Based on my experiences, I’ve made a list of helpful hints for you.
- Do not listen while driving.
- Do not listen at work.
- Do listen often.
- Do share with friends.
The hints are based on listening to a couple of episodes (for the third time) while on a road trip, and temporarily losing control of my vehicle in a fit of laughter. (Fortunately, no wrecks for me.). I also listened to the show for the first time while I was at work. Apparently, uncontrollable laughter is not a sign of a productive employee. (I still have my job, thankfully). The episodes never get old. This is something worth sharing, so share and share often. You’ll need someone to get the inside jokes. Other people are just confused when you start saying things like “Fizz, Buzz, have a banana”. It just isn’t as funny without someone to share it with. No one else would understand why you know that 20 cigarettes will fit on a fish cake either, trust me…so…go out and take a trip with MJN Air.
‘Til next time,
Jessica

Mom and I listened on a road trip to Colorado. Laughed all the way and very disapointed when ran out of episodes on the return trip.
Such good stuff! I can’t wait for the finale to come out!
