Thanksgiving has officially ended. Now I am perfectly prepared to begin looking toward Christmas…bring on the carols, decorations, shopping mall Santas, and, of course, the BBC Christmas lineup. (Okay, so maybe not the shopping mall Santas. They can be a little creepy.) This year, other than the usual festivities, there are a couple of long awaited television episodes airing.
The BBC finally announced last week that Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, will return over the Christmas holiday. January 1, 2014 to be exact. (So, I don’t get to yell “It’s Christmas!” Well, I do but it will be New Year’s…right, stopping now.) Are you as excited as I am? That’s definitely one way to ring in the new year. I would say it comes close to Sherlock’s elation over a locked room murder! A new trailer preceded the announcement by the BBC. It features….the mustache.
Okay, so the mustache isn’t the only thing in the trailer, but it does make a rather impressive appearance, as does a bearded Anderson. (It took me a while to figure out who was sporting all the facial hair.) Finally, the reunion fans have been looking forward to since a tragic John Watson stood at his best friend’s grave! Sherlockians have waited a very long time to see the affect the reemergence of the world’s only consulting detective would have on the army doctor who watched him fall. I’m looking forward to the reunion more than I am the answers Moftiss promised us. Don’t get me wrong…I’ve developed/read a few dozen theories on how Sherlock survives. (The internet can be a black hole sometimes.) The reunion is what fascinates me though. How mad is John really going to be? How soon will Sherlock be forgiven? What’s with the ‘stash?!?
The trailer also features #SherlockLives. After Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary broke 400,000 Tweets with #SaveTheDay, #DoctorWho, #TheDayoftheDoctor, etc., Radio Times announced that it had taken over their top spot, previously held by the Broadchurch season finale with 260,709 tweets. Can #SherlockLives bring in equally impressive numbers? The new trailer aired just after The Day of the Doctor, 50th Anniversary episode, and Sherlockians immediately took to social media. #SherlockLives was trending.
The Sherlock trailer wasn’t the only thing sending WhoLock fans into the stratosphere. The teaser for the Christmas episode of Doctor Who, The Time of the Doctor, also gave us a glimpse of things to come.
Have you ever seen so many villains in one trailer? The Day of the Doctor wasn’t quite the emotional ringer I feared. Apparently they’re saving that for the Whovian’s Christmas present when the Doctor regenerates. Well, it is Christmas at the BBC…and although this will be my first experience with the holiday season with the network, I have heard stories. Lots of stories, sometimes accompanied by tears. Break out the tissues and your shock blanket. I have a feeling we’re going to need them before all is said and done.
Laters,
Jessica
